International mindset
Q: What do you enjoy most about living in Dubai? And how does it compare with life in Sri Lanka?
A: Living in Dubai offers a unique blend of modernity, cosmopolitan energy and extraordinary growth, which is quite different from the serene natural beauty of Sri Lanka.
As a hotelier, I truly appreciate the level of sophistication and innovation that Dubai brings to the hospitality sector. It is a melting pot of cultures, offering unparalleled opportunities for professional development and networking.
The pace of growth is electrifying; and being in hospitality, this enables me to be at the forefront of new trends, technologies and experiences that constantly redefine luxury.
While Sri Lanka’s beauty lies in its tranquillity, lush landscapes and rich cultural heritage, Dubai provides an exciting and dynamic atmosphere, where the skyline and lifestyle are constantly evolving.
I admire how the city balances its rapid development with a commitment to world-class service and an emphasis on hospitality that appeals to global travellers.
From a business perspective, Dubai’s infrastructure, strategic location and diversity of guests make it an exceptional hub for the hotel sector.
Both places hold their own charm but living in Dubai offers a level of ambition and innovation that fuels both personal and professional growth in a way that’s truly inspiring.
Q: How have you adapted to the cultural differences between Sri Lanka and the UAE?
A: Adapting to the cultural differences has been both a rewarding and an enriching experience.
In Sri Lanka, there’s a deep connection to tradition, family values and a more laid-back pace of life. Moving to Dubai – a city known for its diversity and fast-paced cosmopolitan lifestyle – called for a shift in perspective.
One of the most fascinating aspects of Dubai is its cultural melting pot. People from all corners of the world come here to work, live and experience the luxury and opportunities the city offers.
In this environment, I’ve had to adapt to an international mindset, embracing a blend of cultures while respecting the city’s Islamic traditions.
Dubai’s professional culture is dynamic and ambitious, and this has presented an incredible opportunity for personal and career growth. The diversity in the workplace with colleagues and guests from different backgrounds has been an invaluable learning experience.
Living in Dubai has taught me the importance of flexibility and open-mindedness. I’ve come to appreciate the blend of modernity and tradition where people from around the world coexist in harmony, yet maintain their individual cultural identities.
I find the respect for different religions, customs and languages particularly inspiring – it’s something I’ve embraced in my personal and professional life.
Ultimately, both Sri Lanka and Dubai have taught me different things. The former instilled a strong sense of heritage, warmth and community in me, while the latter has enhanced my global perspective, adaptability and understanding of diverse cultures.
The balance between the two has shaped me into a more rounded and adaptable individual, both at work and in life.
