Roshan Madusanka
Against all odds
In the dynamic world of boxing, one athlete’s journey stands out as a testament to dedication, ambition and strategic planning. Meet Tharindu Roshan Madusanka, a talented Sri Lankan boxer whose story encapsulates the essence of perseverance and determination.
With a remarkable record of 92-12 (39 KOs) in 102 amateur fights and two professional bouts, he has established himself as a force to be reckoned with in the boxing arena.
Madusanka finds himself at a pivotal moment in his career, poised to make his mark in the professional boxing circuit. Currently based in Canada, he has his sights set on furthering his education in the US while pursuing his passion for boxing.
“My primary focus is on advancing my professional career. With two professional fights already under my belt and experience from tournaments in Canada, I’m dedicated to refining my skills in this arena,” he says.
He continues: “Then I plan to head to the United States around December to pursue my master’s while training at Straight Jab Boxing in New Jersey, which has generously agreed to sponsor me.”
Despite his focus on professional boxing, Madusanka remains deeply connected to his roots, harbouring aspirations of representing Sri Lanka in the Commonwealth Games: “I have my sights set on the 2026 Games and plan to participate in the trials in Sri Lanka. It’s not simply about personal achievement; it is about making my country proud.”
“I genuinely believe in my ability to secure a medal at the Commonwealth Games, drawing from my combined professional and amateur experience,” he asserts.
Currently based in St. John’s, Newfoundland, he trains at Rock Athletics, which is run by kickboxing world champion Robbie Wiseman.
“I play a dual role here – coaching students while also being a student myself, constantly learning and preparing for my own competitions under the guidance of our experienced coaches,” Madusanka explains.
Throughout his journey, he has encountered numerous challenges and obstacles, but his unwavering determination and commitment have propelled him forward. Reflecting on his past achievements, which include triumphs at national and international competitions, Madusanka remains grounded in his gratitude for the support of his coaches, mentors and family.
His goals in life are quite simple, yet profound: “I aspire to lead a life filled with happiness and fulfilment. When it comes to my ambitions in sports however, I have a grander vision – particularly considering Sri Lanka’s potential in the tourism industry.”
He maintains that “Thailand stands as a shining example of how combat sports like boxing can draw in a significant influx of tourists. With this in mind, my goal is to catalyse the growth of professional boxing in Sri Lanka.”
“By establishing myself as a champion in the US, I aim to attract promoters and investors to Sri Lanka, laying the groundwork for professional boxing events within the country,” Madusanka elaborates.
In today’s world of boxing, the sport has transformed into a lucrative business, mirroring the evolution of mixed martial arts (MMA) and other professional sports.
“It’s not merely about the competition anymore; it’s about the spectacle, audience and financial stakes involved. With packed arenas and substantial sums of money circulating, athletes must navigate this environment strategically.”
Madusanka says: “For me, Floyd Mayweather Jr. epitomises intelligence and success in this business driven era. His flawless record of 50-0 speaks volumes for Mayweather’s skill and strategic prowess in the ring. Despite criticism, he has consistently proven himself, solidifying his status as a boxing icon.”
“In terms of style and technique, Canelo Álvarez is a fighter I deeply admire. His ability to avoid punches and control the fight’s pace is truly impressive. I resonate with his approach, making him my favourite fighter in terms of style and technique,” he adds.
Madusanka has proved sceptics and doubters wrong since he began boxing as an 11-year-old at Kingswood Boxing: “As a professional boxer eyeing the world championship, sceptics may still question me. However, I’ve learned that with self-belief and hard work, anything is achievable.”
“I’ve been fortunate to forge valuable connections in the boxing world. Training in Dubai with legends like Riddick Bowe was an incredible experience,” says Madusanka, who was also humbled and motivated after meeting other greats like Amir Khan and Glen Tapia.
He outlines his vision for the future: “I envision myself stepping into the ring before my fellow Sri Lankans, sharing the stage with world champions on our own soil. This aspiration extends beyond personal achievement; it’s about giving back to my nation and spreading positivity.”
“Achieving this objective would not only bring joy to myself but also to my friends and community, fostering a mutually beneficial outcome for all involved,” Madusanka sums up.

When it comes to boxing, Tharindu Roshan Madusanka says that many people believe that success comes solely from physical practice. But he asserts that in reality, it’s not simply about honing your body; you need to sharpen your mind too.
He states: “The world is constantly evolving and as athletes, we need to stay ahead of the game by staying informed. That means reading research studies, exploring new ideas and engaging in discussions with experts in the field.”
Boxing isn’t merely about throwing punches, Madusanka explains, noting that “it’s about mastering the mental aspects as well. Staying calm, being patient and executing techniques with precision are most important. Training your mind to be in sync with your body is crucial, ensuring that you are always making the right decisions at the right time.”
