Despite numerous initiatives focussed on women’s empowerment, the challenges faced by female athletes often remain overlooked.
In a groundbreaking moment for Sri Lankan martial arts, Nimesha Kumari – an undefeated female fighter – secured a historic sponsorship from the Asian Security Group. This marks the first comprehensive support for a combat sportswoman outside boxing in Sri Lanka, highlighting a significant shift in the sporting landscape.
The 10 year sponsorship covers Nimesha’s professional stipend, nutrition, training and medical expenses, allowing the sportswoman to focus on her development as she prepares for international competitions.
Twenty-one-year-old Nimesha Kumari hails from the rural village of Pallebowala, and is a testament to resilience and determination. Despite facing personal struggles, she has risen to become a prominent figure in Sri Lanka’s combat sports.
With an undefeated record in pro-kickboxing, Nimesha has dominated the sport for over two years since her debut in 2022. Her talents were further recognised when she won best boxer at the National Muay Thai Championships in 2023.
This sponsorship breaks barriers and sets a precedent for future support in martial arts. Nimesha’s journey serves as an inspiration for aspiring athletes everywhere and showcases the transformative power of support in sports.
