Ninety-seven-year-old Leelawathi Dharmaratne recently gained a master’s degree in Buddhist Studies from Kelaniya University – and she nearly set a world record in doing so.

Dharmaratne’s academic journey included the study of seven subjects encompassing a wide range of topics and her thesis focussed on ancient lifestyles reflected in the wood carvings of the Embekke Devalaya in Kandy.

A former English teacher who now lives in Nawalapitiya, Leelawathi embodies a lifelong love for learning. Born on 30 November 1927, she enjoyed a happy childhood, was deeply connected to nature, and eventually pursued her passion for literature and history.

After completing her O-Levels in 1946, she enjoyed a successful career as an English teacher and later became a distinguished notary public. In 1962, she married Chitrasoma Jayalath, with whom she raised four daughters – namely Dhammika, Samudra, Indraneela and Manohari.

Following her husband’s death in 1970, she single-handedly nurtured her family while continuing to thrive academically.

Dharmaratne’s commitment to her studies and dedication to online lectures exemplify her belief that age is no barrier to education.

With a heart full of curiosity and a book always in hand, Leelawathi’s journey is a testament to the power of lifelong learning; it serves as an inspiring example for younger generations.
